Is anyone concerned about Baldoquin? I know it's a small sample size, but 0 hits and 8 strikeouts in 13 ABs is a little worrisome.

Now 0-16 with 10ks. Definitely not worried yet, but that is one brutal start.

Kaleb Cowart has been off to a terrible start too, hitting .167 with 4 total bases in 24 ab

At this time of the season, especially in the minors, pitchers hold a considerable advantage. Hitting is all about timing, and that takes a while to build up for most players. At least 6 weeks. And pitchers, when they're facing a batter for the first time as usually happens every year in the minors, they hold the advantage. It isn't until after a batter has seen a pitcher a few times that he can build a scouting report.

And Heaney's night, brutal. The wind was absolutely howling, routine pop ups were going 30 feet further out to RF and CF. Heaney missed his spots early on and the environment was aiding the hitters. It really got in Heaney's head and he started trying to throw every ball 100 mph and dominate his way out of the inning. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way in the PCL.

He'll get better.

Loooove Sherman Johnson, went to the Travelers/Rough Riders last Saturday and loved what I saw. Think he could be the future leadoff hitter.

Johnson 2B, Trout CF, Calhoun RF, Pujols 1B/DH, with Kubtiza hitting 5th or 6th? Might have flexibility to add a left fielder soon, too. Add a big bat to sandwich in between Pujols and Kubtiza. Have a numbers of positions to evaluate this upcoming offseason, Johnson and Kubitza might just make it easier if they can lock down second and third. Could have a hole in left if Hamilton is indeed finished with the Halos, Joyce is a free agent, Iannetta could leave a hole at catcher, might be a good idea to start looking for a young first baseman to push Albert to DH. Position players will be a big thing to pay attention to this upcoming seasons.

hopefully pitching at SLC doesn't mess with Heaney's head too much.  It's a fine line of putting a guy in a bad pitchers environment to hone his skill vs. what it can do to his confidence.  Clearly, we've seen both ends of the spectrum in just two starts.  I've made mention of this before, but when he's off, he appears to be off in the zone and he gives up a lot of hits.  Not sure of his sequencing, but even though he doesn't walk a ton of guys, he might be getting behind early in the count and then he's force to throw catchup pitches.

Salt Lake is going to have a fun time getting everyone AB's. Kubitza's the main 3B but Rutledge and Green need reps there too in order to stay fresh for a possible UT role. Rutledge has SS, but Green will get some reps there too. LF is Green's main spot but others will rotate in and out of there. Yarbrough has 2B but Green and Rutledge need reps there too. Perez and Bandy are splitting the catching duties and bother are doing an amazing job. Then there's the DH spot which has players shuffling through everyday.

Kind of curious how often players succeed in the majors who averaged over a strikeout a game in the minors with limited power.

The acceptance of the strikeout is much different than it has ever been so it's hard to comp him.  The answer in my mind should also take into account other factors as a result.  His defense will play a key role as will his obp.  Apparently though, he's got more power than he's shown, but we've heard that before.

Regarding the last line, he just wants to be different from our prospects who have less power than theyve shown

Freese is playing an acceptable 3B so far. His defense isn't good, it may not even be average, but it's just good enough. Offensively, he's much better right now than he was this time last season. Meanwhile, Kubitza is crushing AAA pitching, but we kind of already figured he'd do that. But he's struggling in the field so far. His lateral movement is fine but he's not cleanly fielding as many grounders as he needs to. Coming in on weak grounders/bunts is his big weakness right now and teams are trying to expose that, with some success. Kubitza's arm is already quite good. But there's more to this game that hitting and throwing, you have to be able to field the ball consistently, especially at 3B, Kubitza just isn't ready defensively yet. He needs this time in AAA. If the Angels need offense and aren't caring about the glove, then they need to promote a Grant Green immediately.

As for Iannetta, he calls a good game and works all the pitchers really well. A really intelligent ball player. But his lack of framing ability, limited defense skill set and considerable weakness throwing runners out have made the Angels quite vulnerable with runners on. The fact is, he isn't the sort of catcher you play everyday. He's a platoon guy.

Now I get what the Angels are trying to do. Butera's a good defensive catcher usually, and they're trying to buy time to allow Carlos Perez and Jett Bandy to develop further, but it isn't working out as they planned. Iannetta's a black hole both offensively and defensively, and Butera's a black hole offensively. No matter what the Angels do, they're rolling someone out there that's handicapping the team.

Perez and Bandy are both better right now than either option in the majors. Iannetta's useless until his bat comes alive and Butera gives the Angels nothing more than either Bandy or Perez. With Perez, the Angels will have a top notch defensive catcher that's great at making contact and willing to take a walk. In Bandy they have a very good defensive catcher with power and patience.

If it were me, this would be a no-brainer. Cut Butera loose, promote Perez. Send down Cron and Navarro, promote Green and Bandy.

Cowgill would stay in LF until Joyce starts hitting, Perez/Bandy take over the catching duties until Iannetta starts hitting (then demote one and have the other split time), Grant Green is the DH until Joyce-Cron starts hitting.

Use your AAA players right now. Many are outplaying their major league counterparts.
