Upton AND Kimbrel to Padres!!

Recommended Posts

The Braves are rebuilding. An elite closer isn't necessary during rebuilding. Upton is a dump - the dude sucks. Don't know anything about the prospects.

An elite closer isn't necessary at all.

Especially today. There seems to be a lot more guys that can dominate for an inning.  Not at the level of Kimbrel, but that doesn't usually last too long.

BJ Upton is a mess.  I'd rather have Maybin or Quentin.

If any closer deserves it, it's him.

No closer should get that when you can spend it in other places. Bad trade. Upton is useless and still owed $46MM.

Craig Kimbrel rhp

4 years/$42M (2014-17), plus 2018 option

  • 4 years/$42M (2014-17), plus 2018 club option

    • $1M signing bonus
    • 14:$7M, 15:9M, 16:$11M, 17:$13M, 18:$13M club option ($1M buyout)
    • may earn additional $3.5M in performance bonuses
    • award bonuses, including $50,000 for All-Star selection
    • acquired by San Diego in trade from Atlanta 4/5/15

Melvin Upton Jr. cf

5 years/$75.25M (2013-17)

Thought the pads were set in the OF (not that upton helps them in any way). I wonder if theyre setting up a next move? There were rumors going around a while back that meyers would be flipped for cole hammel. Maybe upton is supposed to be insurance in the OF for that?

This Cole Hammel guy must be pretty good, so good that he doesnt even have a scouting report.

Posters have it absolutely correct -- this Braves deal had ONE objective - DUMP UPTON and his lousy, lengthy, expensive contract and like kind (lousy) attitude on some one.

Here they combined the GOOD (Kimbrel, best closer in baseball past four seasons and he has a contract extension through 2017 so it's no rental) with the TERRIBLE (Upton).

None of the guys the Braves got in return will probably figure in their plans or help them much.

This is ADDITION by SUBTRACTION for Atlanta -- and it works!!!  Meanwhile - SD Padres better win this year or our pal Bud Black may be looking for a job.

For the BRAVES -- they trade their closer and one of the guys in line to close for them this season starting NOW: JASON GRILLI.

the other contender is Jim Johnson.

They traded away a couple backup outfielders so I think they're actually down to 4 instead of the 5 they had before.

Not so much. They didn't part ways with anything they were using. Maybin's a good 4th OF, but so is Melvin, plus there's always the off chance he figured out what's wrong.

Quentin wasn't going to play. Wisler's legit, but they already have a deep, talented rotation.

Now the Padres are lining Benoit and Kimbrel up behind Shields in pitcher friendly parks, Ross and Cashner. Kennedy's solid too, plus they'll have Morrow, Despagne and Josh Johnson all battling for the 5th spot.

That's a lot of wins even with only an average offense, which they should at least be.

They're mortgaging the future and taking on a ton of payroll and bad contract to go all-in this season on a high risk team where a lot can go wrong. It's the definition of a bad gamble and yet another misstep in a franchise with a history stocked full of them.

They're going to regret this trade, bottom line.

the pads gave up a legit prospect and some spare parts for one of the best closers in the game and a bunch of dead salary in upton.

this would be like us giving up Heaney, Cowgill, and a couple others for kimbrell and upton.

yeah, that doesn't feel like the best deal for the pads unless they make a nice run.

That upton contract is a killer.

Great deal for both sides I think. The Braves future rotation just got deeper, their OF got more athletic, and they're wagering that a strong first half from Quentin may allow the Braves more value from an AL team at the trade deadline.

As for the Padres, they added a shutdown closer and took on money.

You don't now what you are talking about. Maybin is a throw away along with Quentin. Upton is also a throw away considering their payroll ceiling is no where near maxed out and they can dump him without thinking twice about eating the cost. Their whole intent was a top of the line closer under club control after getting their fair share of future Rondons for Street last season. They added all of $8 million to their payroll for 2015 when all the dust settled.

Kimbrel is an absolute gem. I can't wait to see him closing games against the Dodgers.

http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2015/apr/05/padres-acquire-kimbrel-upton-braves-trade/

Kimbrel, 26, set the major league record for saves by a rookie with 46 in 2011. He led the National League in saves that year and has done so every year since, with an earned-run average under 2.00 in each of the last three seasons and a career strikeouts-per-nine average of 14.8.

The Padres, who play in a pitcher's destination, are doubling down in an area where they already boasted sufficient depth. They had been prepared to enter the season with Joaquin Benoit in the ninth inning, but Sunday, they effectively moved the 37-year-old to a setup role, one in which he should be better suited.
