possible Huston Street extension

Huston Street, self represented, said he and #Angels have had "good dialogue" on an extension. No deadline.

Street says they're "on the same path." Talks have been "steady" since December. Something b/w what Miller & Robertson got ideal.

Re: Huston Street. Robertson got 4/46 and Miller got 4/36. #Angels

I generally don't like RP deals for more than 2 or 3 years, but Street at around 4/40 sounds like it's probably a pretty good deal to me.

Well, if this trend is something we can look forward to...

...sign me up for 4yr/$40 mill. Not a fan of that for relievers but they should be ok since they've got a lot of cheap arms in the minors, etc to fill the other roles

Wow, guess I am in the minority, but I wouldn't go more than 3/21 or so. Look at how lights out Smith was in the closer role last year, and he cost "only" 3/15. We don't need to overpay for a "closer."

Fair point but if you'll notice, the deals that have bitten us on the butt haven't been extensions of our guys but FA signings and trades---Hamilton and Wells in particular, Pujols will be a drag on the payroll soon....I'm sure I'm missing somebody (or several somebodys) but extensions haven't been a problem....Howie, Aybar, Weaver, Ianetta's deal looks ok...all pretty good deals...we'll see on Trout but you couldn't walk away from that deal, given all the circumstances....look at the Phils and their terrible extensions, Tulo, Helton with the Rockies....Votto with the Reds....

the next 2-3 years is a window that the Angels have to take advantage of. Trout is obviously still young, but we're trying to squeeze a couple more productive years out of Pujols, Weaver . .  Aybar will be a FA after 2016. This team is a contender now, and there's no telling where it will stand a few years down the road. Ensuring that Huston Street is our closer for this window of time, even if it means an extra year where he may not be as effective, seems like it's worthwhile. A year or two of a $10M/yr contract for an ineffective and/or injured player isn't going to cripple this team.

Dude has a better save percentage than Rodney though, err...

“If you look at what Miller and Robertson got, I think something between them is justifiable,” Street said Thursday, the day pitchers and catchers reported for spring training. “It’s a principle thing for me. I have the best save percentage in baseball that last four or five years. What’s a guy like that worth?”

I'm a bit leery since we're paying for the age 32-35 seasons of an oft-injured closer.  Huston Street is one of the best in the business, but I don't think he's such a tremendous necessity that the Angels couldn't install Smith as the closer and still experience similar results.  In fact, I'd want to pay him a fair market value of what someone like joe Smith got.

Street point toward a three year, 30-40 million dollar investment.  I'm thinking more along the lines of three years and 15-30 million dollar investment. 3-30 is the max I'd give him, despite the outstanding numbers.

He'd just have to ask himself, is being paid 10 million a year to stay living and playing in So-Cal on a championship caliber team worth it?  I think so.
