You know there's a difference between "their Creator" and God, right?

Cute gif.

The point is that our basic rights do not come from man or from collective agreement. These "unalienable" rights cannot be taken away by majority opinion. Cuomo is wrong here. We have not "evolved as a collective society" beyond freedom of speech.

Cuomo didn't say the freedom of speech part FS.

Not in that 2-minute clip, but the article implies he said it, and other sources attribute the quote to Cuomo. I would like to see the entire interview.

I think he's referring to the fact that certain founders did not believe in a personal God. Jefferson was a Deist, Adams was a Unitarian, etc.

Deists still believed in a god, a creator. The term creator implies something above or beyond this world, that is logic, not faith.  At best he's parsing horribly, at worst simply being obtuse.

honest response. that judge isn't presenting the full truth when saying that deceleration of independence is organic law. it's not the only thing that composes it according to the code. the constitution is included in it. take what you want from that tidbit because the constitution has never been amended since the bill of rights.

Both men made mistakes during the interview. At one point Cuomo rightly states that our "laws" do not come from God, but then later says our "rights" do not. The judge also confuses laws and rights, saying on one point that our "laws come from God". It's clear from the context of the interview that he meant "rights".

The bottom line however is that in that area of the DOI Jefferson was clearly stating that there are certain rights mankind were born with and that those laws were not bestowed upon by other men. Can we agree on that?

It's hard for anyone to talk about this well in a 2-minute live interview. This subject is a little more complex than that.

If they both had gotten the distinction between rights and laws a little clearer, there would be no controversy here.

we sure can mt. i'm looking forward to where you are going with this.

Seriously, I'm not going anywhere with it.  My only point was that Cuomo was off his rocker when he said it and that Glen was being obtuse with his statement.

Cuomo would have come off much better if he had just stated that he doesn't agree with that part of the DOI instead.

while this particular response from one of the readers supports my own belief system, i thought it was a relevant summation:

"If rights are given to you by God, they're always yours and can never be taken away.

If rights are given to you by Man, you'll never know from one day to the next if you'll be able to keep them."

I'm reserving judgment until Brian Williams chimes in since he was there during the drafting of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

I'll accept Bruce's recollection of these events.

I heard he just narrowly missed being shot by a musket.

At the last second Alexander Hamilton stepped into the bullets path. The rest, as they say, is history.

Given the vast number of "unalienable rights" that were previously ignored but now are demanded by society how can one make the claim to have any real idea where these right truly come from? If God does provide these rights is it possible to find a list of other rights he's saving to release on society at a future date?

Ever heard of Commandments 11-15? Oh you will....you will

Speaking of Commandments, this is the same judge who lost his job last decade because he defied orders from a federal judge to have a Ten Commandments monument removed from a state Supreme courthouse.

http://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/11/13/moore.tencommandments/

And now he's doing everything he can to keep gay marriages banned in Alabama. Whatever happened between him and Cuomo is a non-story but make no mistake about it, this guy is a bit of a nutter.
