Lasner Weighs in on Stadium Negotiations

What I find funny about this is how many folk see the Angels as some bully on poor little Anaheim when the truth is Anaheim has been Disney's bitch for sixty years.

Soon Anaheim will cease to exist and instead will be called "DisneyOC".

Regardless Arte will have a new stadium and the folks in Anaheim will sell their land to the mouse and receive very little continuing revenue going forward.

Does Anaheim want to become one giant Disneyland parking lot or keep its multi-dimensional tourism appeal? Surely it's the latter.

The baseball team thinks so much of them that they want to be named for a city 30 miles to the north.

And there is still a Stanley Cup winning hockey team in town.

Yes it's because they think poorly of the city of Anaheim, that's why the call themselves the Los Angeles Angels.

The Angels were originally, and continue to be the Los Angeles Angels.  Autry paid good money to acquire the name, and as far as I know, the team retains ownership.

That's the first correct thing you've said in ages.

This is one of those times when a smart person (you) has a stupid opinion. If you think Arte changed the name because of how he felt about the city of Anaheim or the city council then you are just crazy. It was about his perception of creating more revenue, or more value to his team. Whether he was right or not I don't know, but if he truly had it out for the city they would have had a deal in place with another city and he would be gone his first chance (2016) he had.

There's not much new here. Many people have already theorized that Disney would have interest, as they would in any large parcel within city limits. I hope for everyone's sake that Tait is sincere in saying he's looking out for tax payers by getting the best deal. If the land creates more value for the city as a parking lot that allows Disney expansion than handing it to Arte's development partners for $60 dollars and keeping the Angels, isn't that the fiscally responsible thing to do?

Either way, Angels fans will get a new or remodeled stadium.

Honest question, what revenue does the city of Anaheim take in from an angels game?

From published reports, the lease itself is basically revenue neutral to Anaheim.  It derives substantial tax revenues from business generated by visitors, etc., for baseball related activities  The city commissioned a study that estimated $3.6 million in tax revenues for 2012.  I suspect the actual revenue was less, but the number is still substantial.

Never trust an economic impact study. They very rarely take into account that people might visit Anaheim or buy a hot dog even if there was no ballgame to watch. I don't doubt that the stadium concentrates some tax collection into the city, but what would be there if not for the stadium? Certainly something that generates taxes.

Parking and I'm guessing a cut of concessions but Claude would know this, he's up to speed on this. Also taxes.

The Angels pay NO RENT but in exchange the Angels must maintain the stadium and the parking lot. Arte is already on the hook for $150 million to upgrade the stadium if they stay there.

The City of Anaheim gets $0 for concessions.

The City of Anaheim gets $0 revenue directly from the Angels. They do benefit from the additional local sales tax revenue during game days. Although Disney is the real cash cow.

The City of Anaheim gets the prestige of having a MLB team and a luxary box for city officials.

The Angels get all of the parking revenue until it reaches a certain threshold towards the late end of the season. This has proven to be a very bad deal for the city.

The real truth is that Arte has no where to go. No city is ready to fund an $800 million stadium.

In Arte's defense the lease agreement was originally signed by Disney Co and taken over by Arte when he bought the team.

FYI Tom Tait recently spoke at the Anaheim State of the City Address and expressed his desire to cement a new deal that would be equitable for both parties that keeps the Angels right where they are.

FYI Sam Walton owner of the Anaheim Ducks also pays NO RENT for the Honda Center.

The current lease was a deal with Disney but you need to remember, Disney pumped a lot of money to renovate the ballpark -- that was the trade off.

For Anaheim to lose the Angels would be a terrible PR black eye for them -- in fact, Disney bought the Angels mainly to stop that (Angels moving to another city) from happening.......at the time, Disney thought that Anaheim losing the Rams and the Angels within ten years would be an irreversible black eye for the City and would cause problems for the Disney brand in Anaheim........so Disney bought the ball team, financed a major renovation of the ballpark and actually won the organization's only World Championship (despite or maybe because of Disney neglect of the baseball side operations).

The studies that show that the City could do better with a Disney parking lot on the stadium property is flawed and designed as a defensive tactic in the event the City finds itself defending a lawsuit from the Angels after the City took back it's city council approved official offer to the Angels organization which Arte was ready to say YES to.

oh well.

If the city of Anaheim loses the Angels they will rue the day........
