I was thinking the same thing this morning, except I'd make the 4th year a mutual option year. If, after 3 years, he thinks the market is better, he can go find out (at a year younger he might get a better or longer deal). I'd at least serious consider floating the idea.

As long as the per year was about $18-20 million, this might work.

My guess is Shields will be about on Weaver's level for the next 2 years. Having another guy in the rotation who can give you a guaranteed 200 IP and an ERA around 3.50 would be great. The problem is you'll possibly get that and then some between both Heaney and Trop, and those guys will be pretty much free compared to Shields.

If you can trade CJ after then I'd be all for it. Shields > CJ for the next 2 years. But if he's gonna get 4 or even 5 years, it just isn't worth it.

Let Heaney, Trop, and Shoe all come into their own this year, see if CJ can bounce back and regain some trade value, and go after Zimmerman as the heir apparent to Weaver in 2016.

Your takes are usually right on the money ... but if you even get close to 200 innings and around a 3.50 ERA  from Heaney and Topeano then you are a god.

You have a better shot at those numbers with CJ Wilson.

I was suggesting that between the two of them, their numbers would equate to that much. Both guys aren't going to put up 200 innings individually in 2015. But between them it's a good possibility. If Heaney gets the 5th spot in the rotation and puts up, say 150 innings with an ERA around 3.50, while Trop fills in the other 50 innings as a spot starter and puts up an ERA around 3.75-4.00, it's a pretty realistic prediction.

Anyone think Shields would settle for a 1 year deal for a west coast team? I think the longer he isn't signed, the more likely that scenario happens. And if it does, would you sign him? Say, 1/12M? I know the Angels would lose a pick for that short term deal, but could they gain it back by making qualifying offer after 2015?
