Used Cars

Recommended Posts

I am sure we have had this topic in the past, but I was curious, where do you all look for used cars? I would rather buy from private party, but what I am looking for is what websites or publications do you use to find them? My son turns 16 in March and I originally bought him a Honda Civic but I am going to sell that and buy him something a little bigger and safer. We recently lost a friend who was killed in a car crash driving home from work in a Prius, that is the main reason he won't be driving the Civic. Thanks in advance for the guidance.

Are you concerned about the low profile of the Civic compared to other sedans?

Been a while since I compared ratings, but outside of an armored vehicle :D there seems to be big tradeoffs.  The car with great frontal crash protection might be average or mediocre when broadsided.  It even depends on other minor details like when the car was manufactured, whether it's 2 or 4 doors, etc.

I like autotrader.com. Lots of listings and search options.

That is the first place I go to research the going price for a vehicle I'm looking for. Lot's of dealers advertise in there, but there are also private party cars for sale. You can also go to Kelley blue book and find out what the going price by building a used car based on what you are looking for. That way you have some numbers to to work with going into the deal.

If you are strictly looking for protection I would look for a truck or SUV. Of course they cost more on an average and get less mileage than a Civic.
