Obama wants your 4-year-olds

Actually the data shows there is not a real benefit to start school any earlier for kids.  They get a head start early, but the other kids catch up by the 4th or 5th grade.

Modern parents, looking for any reason to get rid of their kids earlier than ever.

What actually happens is the other kids don't catch up, the class as a whole fails to meet stadards across the board.

Preschool is the T ball of the education world. A way to kill a few hours of your kids time at the expense of other adults. A parent who cared about the kid getting ahead would teach the fundamentals at home so that by the time the kid had the attention span required for a structured multi-child activity he/she will be prepared to get some benefit.

Why not do both?

Because it is a waste of time and money.  Why can't parents actually be parents?

So sending your kid to pre-school means you aren't a parent? I wish I knew this before. I wonder how I should break the news to my son, letting him know I am not his parent. Wait, can I still call him my son?

The argument has been made that it would just basically be daycare.  That is what I was talking about.

Tacking on another year of school will not help more children be more competitive in the global marketplace.  It's just less time they are spending with the people who are supposed to love them the most.

Pre-school would probably last about 3 hours a day. I'm sure that time spent away from their parents won't turn them into strippers.

Agreed and neither is tenure.  They need to figure out how to effectively evalute current teachers and do away with making it damn near impossible to get rid of someone who has tenure.  Most of my teachers were pretty good through high school but I had a few that were horrible at their job, one even complaind about it to the class and yet because of tenure they weren't going anywhere.

They try all different kinds of programs to evaluate teachers. There are test programs all across the country right now.

As in standardized tests?  I'm asking because I honestly don't know and have been out of the public system for 13 years now.  Raising a nation of test takers isn't good and it's defnitely not an effective way to evaluate teachers if that's what's being used.  There have been instances of classes/schools cheating on those tests but I know that's not the majority or anywhere close to it.  Some kind of method using parent/student evaluations and tests might work but again I know teachers have to teach to prepare kids for standardized tests which really doesn't prepare you for the real world.

Different methods.

It's been 30 years since I dealt with American public schools. I listen to horror stories of my friends and siblings and I fell much better about the time and money I've spent on education for my girls.

I haven't yet come up with a solution for the educational system but I did manage to have a pretty good plan to see that my two angels get well educated without relying on government funded preschool or any public school. I intend to retire soon and I want to be sure that they are both capable of supporting a grumpy old man with a Scotch and cigar habit.

The sooner to indoctrinate them my dear. Four year olds are supposed to worship Mommy and Daddy and PLAY you socialist bastich.

Mr. Obama: I want you and your people near my children as much as I want a child molester near my children. I will decide how my children are raised, not you.

Can you imagine the curriculum?

Humanities: Stomp pictures of Jesus, 101.
Science: Conservatives cause Warming 101
History: Hell, we were all slaves! 101
Psych: You're Gov"t property, not Mom & Dad's 101
...whats you say Willis, its not free?

Interesting take.
