Sounds

Are you adept at identifying sounds?

People think I'm crazy because of my knack for identifying certain sounds.  I can tell the difference between sirens of a police car, fire engine, and ambulance.  I also can distinguish between different types of fire engines going down the street by the roar of its Detroit Diesel engine.

I wish I could do something worthwhile with this ability, but alas, it's useless. =)

I thought autistic people avoided sounds.

I may be wrong (correct me if I am, mt), but people on the autism spectrum tend to be more sensitive to stimuli on all five senses. So when they hear something, it's amplified, which means they could easily differentiate between two types of sounds, but at the same time, it's easier for their senses to be overwhelmed.

The spectrum is very broad.

Each kid is different.  Some kids pay attention to everything, some focus on a few, some focus on just one sense.  They are not afraid of sounds nor do they avoid them.  They just process them differently.  Now sounds that surprise them they normally aren't a fan of at all, but who really is.

I remember when Seth first started swim team.  The second day starts with the long swims and they shoot a gun or blow a horn to signify the last lap.  He was on the benches waiting for his first event and absolutely not happy with either of those noises.  Now, once we would remind him that the noise was coming he was fine.

Now he is fine with it.
