Angels among early teams interested in Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

Lou, the Angels have overspent in this International Signing period on Baldoquin. Because we exceeded our Bonus pool allotment the Angels are not allowed to spend I believe more than approximately $300,000 on any one player over the next two signing periods.

Vladdy will be available NEXT signing period (July 2nd) where we will only be able to offer the maximum 300K. Unless he decides that he really wants to be with the Angels (possible) he will very likely receive a much higher offer from another team to play with them.

The only thing we have going for us is that Vladdy liked playing here and that might influence his son's decision. Especially considering that Vladdy is so damn rich that the kid isn't "desperate" to get the big payday that other prospects would be shooting for.

Bottom line is that the deck is stacked against us quite a bit.

Moncada is available to sign in the very near future (before July 2nd) so if the Angels can convince him to sign before then we can spend as much as we like since the penalty is not in effect yet. However we face competition from a couple of other teams one of which is the Yankees since they too also overspent in this signing period. If Moncada waits to sign until after July 2nd the Angels (and Yankees) are out of the bidding since his reported price could be as high as $50MM (unlikely). If he waits until after July 2nd other teams like the Cubs could snatch him up since they did not overspend during this current signing period.

He supposedly (via the internet) has an agreement for 3.2 Million or so with the Blue Jays. Such a verbal agreement would result in a huge fine from MLB should it be proven, and they'd declare Vlad Jr. a FA. Even after the agreement was signed. They could also suspend the Jays Dominican operations like they did when they found out Beltre was 15 when he signed with the Dodgers.

However, the Angels cannot sign him after July 2 unless he wants to take 300k signing bonus. Granted he doesn't have to sign day 1 when he turns 16. He could wait until he's 17, go to an American HS and go through the draft, where he'd certainly be a 1st round pick. Most of the 1st rounders and some 2nd rounders got $2M signing bonuses, but I doubt he'd go this route. He also could play professionally in another countries leagues, and go that route. If he was looking for the kind of contract Cubans have been getting lately, still, don't see this either.

The Angels can of course sign him for the 300k, then sign him to a Major League Contract when he turns 18. That kind of deal would also be against the rules, but hey, all DR stuff is kind of shady anyway.

I'd like to sign him, but realistically, the Angels are probably out of the running.
