Carlos Perez hitting .341 in Winter Ball

Saw a B/R article talking about who's doing well in Winterball and am so use to the Angels *not* having someone in these types of articles that it was nice to see someone doing well. .341 in 126 at bats - how's his defense?

by all accounts he's known more for his very good defense than anything he will likely do with the bat.  But he is not a total slouch at the plate.

Bandy actually has the upside.  If he truly put it together as his numbers show from what he did in AA this year then catcher should not be a huge issue going forward.  The numbers are deceiving because of the park he was in, but the kid is a very good defender with excellent power and his BABIP was very low so he may have even gotten a bit unlucky.  He could be an Ianetta type with very good defense.

Trading Conger got us some surprisingly good pieces

Surprisingly, this team is better minus Conger. I think he was a good "pitch-framer" and had the instincts for the position. But he never put it completely together offensively or defensively despite immense talent.

Translation, he was a backup that could've been more.

In return we got a sterling defensive catcher that isn't lost at the plate who will be Hank's eventual replacement, plus a very good, young back end starter.

I feel that both Bandy and Perez are upgrades over Hank at this point because their defense is better and thus better fits the position of backup catcher.

Conger for Perez and Tropeano may go down as one of Dipoto's subtly greatest moves. I also like the future tandem of Bandy and Perez, although neither will be stars. But together they could be a quality team.

 

I seem to remember reading somewhere Dipoto saying that he's getting more calls about Perez than anyone else.

Yeah, Dipoto had mentioned that.  Tropeano's numbers in the minors and his change up and control indicate this kid should be a pretty decent big league starter.  Getting that for our backup catcher is huge.

Agreed on tropeano. Im hoping he can be another skaggs. Skaggs probably has higher upside, but if tropeano can be a high 3's era guy, from the back of the rotation, its a steal.

If he can go 6 innings and keep us in the game ill take it. And agreed,getting that for conger (who im a fan of) is a great move.
