So Uber acknowledges the hostage situation as justification for the outrageous rates. Uber has been portraying themselves as a very arrogant/ignorant company. I've been using Lyft recently and it might stay that way.

To be fare they later offered free rides to anyone leaving that area.

I was at that Lindt cafe a week ago and go there regularly when I'm in Sydney. It's just down the road from Sydney's main shopping areas and Christmas decorations so it was filled with families who were doing their Christmas shopping or taking in the festive cheer. It had such a happy vibe to it. So horrible to think about what's going on there.

Speaking before the site was stormed, New South Wales Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said "the very best negotiators in the world" were trying to end the standoff.
