Comcast to begin charging for data usage on home internet the same way cell phone companies are charging for data

In this trial, XFINITY Internet Economy Plus customers can choose to enroll in the Flexible-Data Option to receive a $5.00 credit on their monthly bill and reduce their data usage plan from 300 GB to 5 GB. If customers choose this option and use more than 5 GB of data in any given month, they will not receive the $5.00 credit and will be charged an additional $1.00 for each gigabyte of data used over the 5 GB included in the Flexible-Data Option.

I'm wondering if they are throwing this out as a trial balloon as a prelude to forcing everyone into something similar.

They are basically preying on people who aren't tech savvy.

People will think they're getting a deal not realizing how much data they actually use

$1 for every GB used after your monthly allotment of 5gb.

Streaming Netflix in HD equals out to 3GB per Hour.

Say your family uses streaming programs like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon ext for 20 hours a week. That equals out to around 240 GB used a month from streaming alone. So an extra 240 bucks on top of your bill for the month.

I'm assuming they will also lock them into contracts and charge huge cancellation fees.

Rather the way that AOL used to market to those who weren't knowledgeable. Their slogan - AOL is the Internet and more - implied to those who didn't know better that AOL and the internet were the same thing, AOL owned the internet or AOL was the only way you could reach it. As people became tech savvy they invariably left.

Unfortunately, many people have no where else to go since Comcast has no competition.

People are going to be using more data in the future. Enforcing data caps would be suicidal if there was competition.

Imagine how much data would be required to watch Netflix in 4k.

You'd blow through your cap in half a season of House of Cards even at the 300 gb tier.
