The Angels should sign Pablo Sandoval (within reason)

Why? Because he is fat? Have you looked at his numbers and age? When was the last time the Angels had a chance to sign a player heading into his prime that plays a position they haven't had good production from in 10 years?

Could he be a bust? Sure but so can pretty much any FA. Not getting any real compelling reasons why he shouldn't be signed. He will be 33 years old or so at the end of the contract he would sign with us. This means he will be in line for another deal which will make him want to stay in shape and play well in order to get another good contract.

Various other posters in this thread already summed up my thoughts

he's 28 years old and 240 (yeah right!). conditioning has always been a problem with him. the giants have already gotten his best years. he'll be a good offensive player for several more years, but not 6/100 good and that's what he's looking for. if he suddenly became available for 3/50, then sure i'd love to have him, but that's not going to happen. if his market collapses for some reason, then he's still going to sign with the giants.

as i already said, i don't really see how he sticks at third as he ages that body. he has 1b written all over him, and that's just one more deal breaker for the angels. i virtually guarantee that dipoto and staff aren't even considering the guy. i'd be shocked.

I wouldn't sign this guy for the simple reason he annoys the hell out of me....I could care less how he'd done in the playoffs..that's how much he annoys me. I don't care if they wanted Callaspo for him straight up. No.

More than Brian Wilson, Alex Rodriguez or anyone else you can think of.

His mannerisms, those stupid hats, the way he walks up to bat...the way they've threatened to get him in shape three times (and he's failed three times).

Yeah, I'm sure he'll be injury prone and no...it's not cause he's on the Giants. I'd actually take several of their players.

Also, a reasonable deal? What's that? He's going to get a minimum of 5 years/ 80 million.

Yes. And attributing his 2013 "decline" to his weight is quite a leap. I'm not a fan of free agent signings in general and I think the nature of free agency is a more appropriate topic, but this whole weight/body type discussion is ridiculous, especially considering Fielder (and Sandoval for that matter) haven't sustained any weight-related injuries.

Herniated discs are not related to weight. I will have to write that down

Love this thread title.  Angels should sign a big name free agent but keep it within reason.

As if any contract to any notable free agent these days is "within reason."  What sounds good to you, how about 5 years 5 million a year?  Better yet why dont we just sign him to an incentive based contract.  While were at it lets just sign everyone to incentive based contracts.

Have not read all the posts on this thread -- seen some -- I'm with those who say --stay away from the Panda.

Look, the Panda had a pretty good post -season but was pretty much hit and miss (particularly the first half of the season) -- he also was on the DL for a spell.

He came on late and then in the playoffs and his F/A value went up plus it puts pressure on the SF Giants to retain a fan favorite and keep selling those Panda hats/ ear muffs --whatever.

as for us -- I am not a great Freese fan (as those who read my posts this past year are aware) -- but I am also not in favor of following up one bad contract (and, actually the Freese trade and contract isn't all that bad -- we all know we've had and have (Hamilton) worse) with another.

stay away from the Panda.

The last four months of the season they put up the following numbers

BA .281 vs. .295

SLG .425 vs. .410

HR 8 vs. 8

RBI 41 vs. 48

Which one is which? Honestly can't see why you would guarantee one of those guys around 100 million when the other guy has already adjusted to the team and ballpark for around 6-7 million guaranteed. Freese had his best month of the season in September and was the only Angel, other than Calhoun, who was hitting the ball hard with any consistency in the ALDS. Which must be the reason why he was getting substituted by his manager any chance Sosh got. Sandoval is NOT Beltre of 4 years ago. Not even close. I don't see what adding another albatross contract would be getting them other than another overpaid aging veteran.

While there have been reports, most notably from Buster Olney of ESPN.com, that the San Francisco Giants are optimistic about re-signing Pablo Sandoval and that a deal could happen soon, an executive with another major league club said Tuesday that the Red Sox are "all in" on the free-agent third baseman and are making a big push to sign him.
