I read the Ben Badler piece from Baseball America and am left utterly confused. Badler says Baldoquin served as a part-timer in Cuba, had mediocre numbers and possessed nothing more than doubles power in his swing.

He's wondering what the Angels saw that other teams are missing and why they felt so confident they dropped 14 million on this player.

Reports on Baldoquin have been pretty underwhelming. The Angels know more about him than anyone else, but it seems like he isn't a guy who's worth breaking their bonus pool for and having to sit out the next 2 signing periods. I don't get it

Perhaps they really liked him but really just wanted to show Moncada they are serious about signing Cuban players and are willing to show him the money.

If they get Moncada it makes perfect sense.
