Well, a life-long prison sentence probably won't do that. They get food, water, and a roof above their heads.

But what I think we agree on is that they deserve a shitty fate. Food, water, and a roof over someone's head doesn't prevent someone from being depressed. I'm not sure if this couple would be put in gen pop, where they would undoubtedly take a beating... or if they would be quarantined, where day after day of doing nothing in a small room would drive anyone mad. If you talk to people who suffer from severe depression with no chance of a turnaround, they'd tell you they would rather be dead. Mental anguish is one of the worst things one can suffer from. A lifetime in the pen would achieve that end, IMO. Death is too good for them.

I wonder what the real reason this country gave up hanging was. Did people decide at some point it was cruel or were there too many quick hangings in the heat of the moment that were later found/realized to be wrong.
