It's better to spend a total of $60-80 million on someone with huge upside, than $125 million on a washed up OF who stunk it up for 2.5 months in 2012 before being signed. 

Both are question marks, but at least Moncado isn't already on his decline.

Especially since they blew their spending limit and incurred the max penalty on a guy no one but the Angels apparently wanted. At least not enough to blow past the limit.

With how much this guy is going to get paid it matters very little that they signed the other guy and have to pay 100% tax on his entire bonus. Really, what is the difference between paying tax on $40 million or paying tax on $38 million? It isn't enough to make you decide you don't want the guy. If the Angels were a player for him before they signed the other Cuban, then they will still be a player for him now.
