People who complain about immigrants taking jobs away

If you were born here, have access to all the education, etc that is out there.....

Is is not your fault if you have not made yourself more valuable by your mid to late 20's, than some guy who got dropped off here in a truck 5 days ago with no English skills?

^^^

agreed.

we used to be a melting pot. now we're subdividing into multiple quadrants of ethnic enclaves that have very little interest in becoming american. they seem to want to be only their nationality but just do it here in the US because of whatever reasons.

I really can't recall the last complain I have heard about immigrants taking jobs since that South Park episode.  Further, someone dropped off here 5 days ago is not taking a job that anyone already in America wants otherwise those Americans would already have the job.

Look guys, the topic is worker value and many immigrants do bring labor skills that most of you were never taught. The average white twenty something never held a hammer or shovel and wouldn't be able to cope with basic repair without a YouTube video explaining lefty loosey, right tighty.

Most immigrants are on an apprenticeship with someone that has already established themselves here and in a way there is a brown barrier for anyone that isn't an amigo to get that first step in the door.

While white people made a push for education and white collar work the trades were taken over by guys that weren't allowed that luxury. So if your half educated self needs a decent paying job the construction, road work, dirty jobs already are filled by guys that were paying dues since graduating grade school.

Yes.

I have a friend who didn't do well in high school and never went to college.  He started mowing lawns as a teenager and never quit.  He makes $80,000 a year.  Lots of affluent folks with phobias for illegals (or just Mexicans in general) will pay astronomical amounts to have a white guy mow their grass.

That's what I don't understand about America's youth.  The going rate for gardeners in SoCal seems to be $30 a week.  The average yard would probably take an hour for a kid working alone, but so what?  Subtract money for gas and equipment, and you'd still make $25/hour.  Why not do that instead of scrambling to find some fast food or retail outlet that pays minimum wage?

the king of the netherlands recently said: its not societys job to conform to the immigrants, its up to them to conform to the culture they emigrate to.

what a concept.

My wife and I have discussed this on several occasions. It has mainly been in the context of Hispanics demanding that the US Government conduct business in Spanish. I was in a situation during a trip to Mexico, in a tourist area frequented by Americans and Canadians, in which I had to get cash from an ATM because the doctor at our hotel had no way to take credit or debit cards. There wasn't a word of English on the transaction menu on the ATM. Fortunately my 15 semester hours of Spanish in college came in handy, as I retained enough of it to complete the transaction. I adapted to life where I was, despite the fact that I had only been there for two days.

This would be like us moving to Paris and demanding that everything be done in English, or marching in the streets of Mexico City carrying American flags and demanding change. I doubt that it would go very far.

can't imagine this would go over very well in france. interestingly, i read recently that over 27 different languages are currently being spoken by students in the la unified school district. how far are they going to take this concept of being politically correct to immigrants? attempt to teach classes in these 27 non english languages?

and yes, if you speak fluent english (given the same skill set) you are more valuable than a monolingual non english speaker.

Just because there are 27 different languages being spoken in LA Unified doesn't mean they are teaching in those languages you dolt.

My grandma in law teaches in LA Unified in the heart of LA. She said there are of course ESL (she called it something different) classes where the kids are learning English and their curriculum is English but of course assisted by a bi lingual person so they learn the language and the subject matter. She said all the kids are way eager to learn english and of course the parents who are mostly illegal really want their kids to learn also.
