Angels changing hitting coach?

I just read that Chili Davis is the new RS hitting coach.  Why would the Ath get rid of him?

Bruce, I don't think they got rid of him so much as he went looking for a more high profile job.  He had interviewed with both the Yanks and the Bosox for their hitting coach jobs.

I quoted that idiom too -- it's interesting to see how over time it's viewed as less of an insult than it was originally intended by George Bernard Shaw.

Those who can, do.   Those who can't, teach.

Those who can't get their ass out of bed in time to have a regular job become playwrights.

Dave Hansen and Sosh were Dodger team mates.

Hansen was a pretty good bench depth guy for the Dodgers and even if he had a .260 lifetime BA, was pretty good as a PH off the bench.

He played for the Dodgers (maybe two different stints) for a number of years and also played for the Chicago Cubs.

Not a bad choice -- Baylor is getting up in age -- isn't he 65 plus? has had some health issues and is probably looking for a different position within the organization where he doesn't have to travel as much. Makes sense.

As Casey Stengel once said, 'you could look it up" and I did.

Dave Hansen is the All Time LA Dodger leader in career pinch hits -- 110.

I sort of vaguely remember that he passed another great Dodger bench guy/ PH -- MANNY MOTA.

Manny Mota was incredible........he was the Dodger coach down the stretch run in something like 1991 -- when rosters expanded in September the Dodger activated him and used him as a PH in the late innings of their pennant stretch run  -- first time up he knocked a two run single up the middle.......and then he did it again a day later in another critical game vs. Houston.

So Hansen passed up the guy most people associate with pinch hitting and the Dodgers - Manny Mota......so that's GOOD.

When is the last time a team replaced their hitting coach when they had the best offense in baseball?

Haven't you learned anything?  Having the best record and offense during the regular season is meaningless.  In the playoffs, when it matters, the Angels sucked.  Therefore the manager and coaches should be fired.

Don't forget trading all the guys who didn't play well in a 3 game sample.

And who can blame him for that?  He had great success in Oakland stressing waiting for the fast ball and squaring it up.  He took some discarded players that most thought were done and made them good hitters.  The A's players apparently loved the guy.

I dunno.  I'm a bit put off by it.  I can do plenty of other things.  I choose to teach.

(Yeah.  I'm not good at the major choices in life.)

Yeah totally -- he used it in a very offensive manner and for a long long time it was considered a very dismissive.   I don't blame you or anyone for being put off even offended, but you have to admit the idiom has somewhat softened over the years and no longer considered strictly an insult.

I have a lot of respect for people who take the career path you did.

I think Chili gets it -- he's paying his dues.  He's going to be a manager someday - his current contract will run for 3 years but I wouldn't be shocked to see him get offered a job managing before it's up.

Dude won me over when he put Jim Edmonds into a wall.

Thanks.  I love the little bastards!

I think I read that his intellectual needs weren't being met in a traditional setting so he left.  I don't really remember the story, but he sounded like an ass.
