The gaming industry just stepped it up a notch

It's one thing to say that they don't have any redeeming value but the conversation starts getting a little nutty when someone says it pushes kids towards shooting up their schools.

Andres Breivik was a far right Zionist nut job who was an adult when he committed that terrorist act. I don't see any revelance as it relates to this thread.

He stated he played Call of Duty to help him with "target aquisition". Like I said they do not cause people to do these things just like the gun isn't responsible for the shooting. Many of these active shooters do play them so there's that.

I enjoy and play these games so I can't demonize them but what redeeming or positive qualities do they have for younger children? In no way do I think they cause someone to do this as these are obviously unhinged people. It's no doubt they can play a role in these mass shootings. Read up on Andres Breivak and his shooting of some 70+ people in Norway.

Agreed. Like I said before, I don't think violent video games turn normal people into psychopaths, but I don't doubt that they are fuel for the fire for people with psychopathic tendencies.

Having mild knowledge about psychopaths from my spouses occupation, various things can trigger psychopaths. I suppose you could go around an ban everything that people think are triggers, but at the end of the day psychopaths are going to be psychopaths whether they play video games, listen to metal music, have PTSD, or some other issue.

I'm not arguing that violent video games should be banned. I'm just pointing out that I believe they can have an affect on people's minds.

I totally agree. My initial post states that these active shooter types are unhinged people and nothing else is to blame. This "Hatred" game from the video is absolutley disgusting and doesn't have any redeeming qualities for children or adults. It says the game is due out Q2 of 2015, I doubt it ever sees the light of day.

I haven't played video games in a couple years and this wouldn't sway me to play again. So in my opinion the gaming industry stepped it down a notch if this gets backed. But seeing that Epic Games has already distanced themselves, other companies will follow suit. I bet Toys R Us, Walmart, Target and other big box retailers will not carry this game. So without huge distribution, this developer will have a difficult time staying afloat or finding investors.

The gaming industry is fighting the public perception that video games are creating real life killers. This game will send the wrong message and gives the perception they don't care. If it makes it to the US market, it's possible developers/platforms will publicly denounce the game. They would want to assure consumers that their company would never support such a game and to continue to buy their products.

But in all likelihood, this game will get much more media attention than people actually playing this game.

this game is both horrendously offensive and mildly interesting.

my willingness to accept it's right to exist does not have anything to do with my willingness to expose my kids to it.

like porn for instance.

the point of accessibility comes into play though.  If a 12 year old kid can walk into a store and buy this game, I certainly have a problem with that.  Just because video games were initially something geared towards kids shouldn't change whether their content is monitored appropriately.

Even if they are not, it's my responsibility as a parent to pay attention to it.  There are gaps in the system and it's my job to fill them.

You have to consider that it's not the game that f'd up some kid, but what else is going on in the kids entire support system if they are allowed to play a game like this.  Exposure to one game is a microcosm of what is likely a failure to provide appropriate guidance or at least an adequate baseline for decision making.

Yeah, this game like most nowadays will be rated M and have an 18+ age limit to purchase.

Games are more mature now as the industry did studies and people that grew up playing them in the 80s still play them and the industries best sellers are games geared toward people in their late 20s to late 30s. They market more towards the video game generation.

I disagree.

People have and need their outlets. Some smoke when stressed, eat, drink booze, want to shoot people in video games, yell in pillows, or maybe take a drive or walk to clear their head. It's not up for us to decide how people should have their outlets if it doesn't affect others.

Just because you don't see it as redeeming for adults doesn't mean that's the way it is.

I'd rather someone blow off some steam playing a violent video game than getting shit faced and driving or beating up on their wife or kids.

IMO it's worse when parents take their kids to see extremely violent R rated movies. A video game is fantasy, there is nothing about any game that applies to the real world, even sports games cause those shits be way off, and any normal balanced person is mature enough to realize that and not take anything seriously.

with that said, its clear this game was created for shock value alone and I wouldn't be surprised if the overall product is very poor. Its a clear money grab. People will buy it though, just so they can say they have it. I doubt it will get much play time, however.

also, people who say shooters "train" you to shoot and handle guns, are full of pure BS and dont know what they're talking about.

Purely gratuitous... These games with no redeeming-value definitely play a role in pushing kids toward shooting-up their schools. They desensitize the kids to blood, gore, and emotion.

.

100% disagree.

mental illnesses and/or other people abusing kids mentally and physically is what causes kids to commit violent acts. Video games just get blamed because its an easier scapegoat than actually dealing with the real issues with society.

I wouldn't go that far. If the game has no story or any replay value no one is going to play it. These days most games are sandbox types or have some kind of killing in them, whether it's this or Halo.

There have been a bunch of these types of games, but the running around killing randoms gets so old quick they all flop.

Agree 100% with this
