WFAN rumor: Mets interested in Hamilton

Stradling we need pitchers, not overpaid hitters. We're stocked full of those.

You think he is overpaid now, wait until we are paying him $20 million a year not to play for us. Also Niese is not the answer. If you want to save a few million this coming year, then trade Howie for young pitching like we did Trumbo.

Agreed.  Because Scioscia will still play with these toys daily, even if they are broken down and barely working.

Because, hey, the toy worked well in 2011.

The more dumbfounding question, IMO, is still why spend so much $$$ on payroll when you negate much the potential gains by stick with a skipper who mismanages his assets?

For example, Raul Ibanez being on the roster doesn't mean he needs to play LF and bat cleanup. With another manager you cuold still afford to have "toys" like Hamilton be on the roster, and yet be used in a more appropriate manner, instead of being forced to pull the trigger on a trade for a bad pitcher to protect the team from the manager.  Of course it's possible we're looking at it all wrong and things like Pujols batting third, Hamilton starting all three games in the playoffs, Wells etc. move that irritate the fanbase so much are all owner-driven decisions and not entirely the fault of Scioscia. We unfortunately may never know unless Scioscia ends up manging another team and no longer pulls those kinds of stunts =(

Wouldn't mind Niese if they took on like 60% of Hamilton's salary.

Nobody would take on 60% of Hamilton's salary, unless it's the Braves if we take BJ Upton or the Cubs if we take on Edwin Jackson or the Yanks if we take on ARod....no reason for the Mets to give up an ok pitcher and take on 60% of the salary of one of the most overpaid players in baseball....

....I'm all for trading Hamilton, but losing a league average bat to acquire a guy that likely puts up an ERA north of 4.50 for 10 mil in savings seems less than ideal.

Niese has been 3.40, 3.71 and 3.40 the last 3 years....pitcher friendly park and easier league to pitch in but not sure it equates to an ERA a full run a game higher....

I'm sure that you could track any manager over the course of a year, or in Mike's case 15 years and say he mismanages his assets. There are some of you, you in particular want to blame Scioscia for mismanaging his assets but won't give him credit for mismanaging this team to a 98 win season. Raul as bad as he was didn't cost us games in LF, and he wasn't even given 200 plate appearances this year. He was given just as much rope as he should have being a veteran with a nice career. Has Mike made some bad decisions, of course, so has every other manager, including guys we all put on a pedestool on this website.

FYI, Angels has the chance to claim Niese on waivers after Richards got hurt but they didn't because they were very leery of his medicals.

As they should be. He's already suffered a partially torn rotator cuff and rehabbed it rather than having surgery. His shoulder acted up last season and sent him to the DL for a bit. If I'm the Angels, I'm staying far away from a pitcher with shoulder woes

Yes Lou, we have overpaid hitters like Albert and Trout. You know Mike Trout, the probable MVP, he and Albert equal "stocked full of", because in his scenario we don't have Hamilton.

Right now, in reality, josh Hamilton is on the team.

He and Albert right now account for 40% of the entire team payroll. So yeah, we are stocked.
