thre's a couple of guys out there that are really good. consistent strike zones, alert calls in the field.

west and the others appear to want to make themselves the stars or at least to put the focus on themselves.

i always figure an ump is doing a great job when you dont even notice him.

 

This should be - should be - every umpire's ultimate goal, to be virtually invisible while fans enjoy the play on the field. Then you have idiots like Joe West who make it all about themselves. He will make a controversial call in some critical game, provoke a player who disagrees with him and then eject said player from the game. Joe West has been a joke for years, and the biggest joke is that he heads the umpires' union.

 

Instead of being a job for life, I wish that umpires had a relegation system similar to what is used in the English Premier League. If you had, say, ten umpires who were selected for promotion and ten for relegation each year from each level based upon their performance on the field calling games and how they handle tough situations, it might provide a bit more incentive to be more of an umpire and less of a showboat. Kick Joe West down to the International League and let him work his way back up.
