Fire in Silverado Canyon

And people laugh at the drought being no big deal?

We've had a whopping 15 inches of rain in THREE years.

That is the norm for ONE year.

We had better have at least normal rainfall this year, or this state will be in a h_ll in a handbasket condition.

Rainy winter: "All this rain has allowed the brush to grow and the fire danger is greater than ever!"

Dry winter: "With the lack of rain the brush has dried out and the fire danger is greater than ever!"

LOL at news sensationalism.

The brush will grow with rain, but without having a lack of rain in any year, it wouldn't become such a tinder box.

That's not to say that fires wouldn't happen.

Just that the extremes of the past 2 decades, going back to the mother of all El Ninos in 1997/1998, have created these tinder box conditions in the real dry years.

It's hot as shit. The brush is going to dry out no matter how much it rains in January.

This is vewy true. We don't usually get a lot of  rain June-October ....

I believe Laguna Beach employs goats to keep the brush at bay.

Don't know about   all the canyons but SOME  homeowners are supposed to have a clearance of [something] feet around their property.

catch 22 on the brush. if it rains a lot, there's more brush to burn, making for a more intense fire that's more difficult to extinguish. when there's less rain, there's less brush but it's a lot drier and catches fire more easily.

or something like that.

Who is laughing at the drought and saying it's no big deal?

story on the news last week of some guy in fullerton who shut off his sprinklers because of the drought. lawn turned brown, completely dead. city has fined him over $1200 for not taking proper care of his grass. neighbors are upset over the threat of decreased property values when they go to sell.

i see no reason why people can't use artificial turf. the city of glendale fines people for using it, which just seems stupid and silly. shouldn't watering our lawns during a drought be something we put a halt to?
