Great Start By Jason Vargas!

Recommended Posts

Regardless of the outcome...Vargas had a great gameplan going into the game...he had a career era close to 5.00 in arlington but he was on his game today!

Final line...

5.2 IP  8 H  1 R  1 ER  2 BB  4 SO  0 HR  1.59 ERA

:D

I'll gladly take that from out #4 starter

I just started watching the game and reviewed the box scores. Pleasantly surprised by Vargas, and the fact that this a day game in Texas is a pitchers duel so far.

Unfortunately not surprised by the Hamilton situation (Hamilton = taking the bat out of Pujols hands).

8 hits and 2 BB in 5 2/3 is not good, but he did well pitching himself out of some jams.

it is when you suck @ss pitching against the rangers during your career

I was expecting 3-4 homers and 6+ ER in <5 innings, followed by Jerome being brought in to fan the flames (read: allow all the inherited runners to score, and then some)

Fantastic start.  I do believe that even with the way Blanton pitched yesterday, the pitching staf is doing their collective jobs as DiPoto thought they would.

The offense.....  well that has just been offensive.  I have smelled shit on my lawn that has smelled better than that.

This. About half of those hits were weak sauce. Overall when you only allow 1 run in Texas against that lineup you've done well.

I'll play the devil's advocate here a bit.  First, I have to say that I thought Vargas gave a solid outing and perhaps should have been kept in a bit longer, and allowing only one run to Texas in their stadium is tits.  However, as for the weak hits - those kind of hits usually happen a bunch to bad pitchers, that's why they're bad pitchers.  Again, not saying Vargas sucked because he didn't.  I just don't go in for the "weak hits" argument.  Good pitchers find a way around them, like Vargas did.

I think the end result for Vargas was great.  As for pitching great, not so much.  He was working in and out of james all day.  I mean that was a HARD FOUGHT 5 2/3 innings he gave us.  But no arguing the fact that he got the job done.  A great start though, would've included him not having to work so hard to keep the Rangers offense at bay, using less pitches and therefore going maybe an inning further.
