A tiebreaker game is played because the advantage of division leader vs wild card is actually significant now. When both teams were guaranteed to reach the division sereis it didn't really matter as much.

The home field advantage for the tiebreaker game is played in the home park of whoever won the season series (the old tiebreaker rule)
