Protected forums

this is weird. i was just in the hangout forum reading about the simpsons marathon and when i went to click on page of the thread, i got a pop up box telling me it was a protected forum and needed my password. i'm looking at all of the forums and seeing that more than 75% of them are now listed as protected forums.

 

anyone else having this issue? when i typed in my password it said i didn't have access. what's going on here?
