Jason Grilli

Recommended Posts

Jason Grilli has turned out to be a very nice acquisition. Obtained for what was essentially a dead spot in the bullpen, he has been more than adequate since arriving. Tonight he was throwing hard and hitting his spots. Even though he wasn't brought here to be the closer, it's nice to have a guy who has been in the role before who you can go to in that spot when your closer isn't available.

This may turn out to be the deal of the year. We traded a pitcher who was killing us for one who has become a valuable member of the bullpen.

Grilli is sort of this year's Frieri -- ironic !!

But remember two years ago when we got Frieri for next to nothing, he was ineffective in San Diego and came over here and become the closer.

Now Frieri is all used up, best years behind him, and we deal him for Grilli (who is more of reclamation project than Frieri because Frieri in SD was a 'never was' while Grilli has had success as a closer in the past).....but still.......Grilli performing well for us now.

It is also good to have Salas aboard as he has some closer experience also.  Quite a bull pen.

Add in the fact that Jepsen has put it all together this year, and we've got a way better bullpen than last year.

And one of the first complaints coming out of spring training was that Dipoto hadn't done enough to fix the bullpen.

My second biggest complaint was he didn't acquire enough starting pitching depth and that we were foolish to not retain Jason Vargas (could have given him a one year qualifying offer, overpay but insurance against a starter or two getting injuries) At the time I said we were one injury away from Shoemaker pitching...

My biggest complaint at the time was letting Bourjos get away for next to nothing.

I believe that the Angels made an offer to Vargas but he was on vacation and did not want to consider it in the time frame that the Angels set.  It was a very similar offer to what he finally received.

That was Matt Garza. Unless the same exact thing happened to Vargas.

Yes. He was shaky early in the year but since then solid.

But we gave up Grichuk who somehow transformed from a 4th outfielder to a super prospect the moment he was traded to St Louis :(
