Too bad.   I didn't give a crap about him as a critic, but I really had come to enjoy his thoughts and wisdom the last couple of years.

 

I will miss his entries into the New Yorkers cartoon contest.

Very sad to hear. Didn't always agree with his opinions but he always was good at least at defending his opinion. Will always appreciate him for Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.

I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE the news of his passing.

 

Grew up watching him and Ebert through my adolescent years and the Roeper era when I started college at Mt. SAC in the early 00s.  Loved reading his insightful blogs on society in his last few years as well.

One of the more memorable reviews I remember reading from Roger Ebert was his review for Armageddon:

 

 

"Here it is at last, the first 150-minute trailer. ``Armageddon'' is cut together like its own highlights. Take almost any 30 seconds at random, and you'd have a TV ad. The movie is an assault on the eyes, the ears, the brain, common sense and the human desire to be entertained. No matter what they're charging to get in, it's worth more to get out."

That review hits a special chord with me since it reflects my loathing of Michael Bay.

Armageddon is one of those movies most people tend to hate, but I happen to love. I even get a little misty eyed at the end.
