Weaver has been an exactly league average pitcher this season. And he's been worse than that of late.

That's great and all...but no. He got injured after the trade deadline was over. And they said he wouldn't need surgery last week... in August. Again, after the trade deadline had well passed.

I was under the impression that Skaggs had Tommy John before?  Seems to me that this puts us in a pretty impossible situation pitching wise vs. Oakland and Detroit.  Sadness consumes me

waiver wire deal by DiPoto a possibility -- usually these desperate moves result in bad deals with short term rental which weakens farm and team long term.

 

perhaps doing nothing might be better (than making a really bad waiver wire move)?

 

we've got Randy Wolf at SLC as rotation insurance........you know, he's seen better days but not that long ago he had some pretty good starts for the Dodgers.

 

he might be a serviceable starter for five innings and then go with the pen depth.........that's better than making a deal that has long term negative impact.

 

Remember the Haren deadline deal a few years back?  A lot of us liked it at the time (I know I did) and then two things happened right away -- the Angels lost a few critical games before Haren even reported to the team and by the time he joined the team, the Angels season was effectively OVER -- they were out of contention (but Haren was signed for another year at the time so not all lost) and then, if you may remember, Haren actually got hurt in his very first Halos appearance/ start.....

 

so the Angels made a deadline deal , give away some good players (prospects) weaken farm and the short term benefit didn't even last a week, if that.

 

that could happen here.  (Haren was a deadline deal, not a waiver wire deal, I realize that).

Ahh yes, it's good to see the name-calling mod (Eric Notti) delete his rage-filled post after realizing it was full of inaccuracies (like claiming Skaggs got injured before the deadline and that's why the Angels didn't disclose the full extent of his injury until later). Nice one.

I think that it's safe to say that we won't see Tyler Skaggs until spring training of 2016. Which is 553 days from today. So both Corbin and Skaggs end up with the same fate.

Well it is kinda ironic after all of the Corbin and Skaggs talk here that they both end up under the knife with the same surgery while Haren is still pitching and listed as a #4 for the Dogs. The life of a baseball trade can change in an instant. Can you imagine what will be said if Trumbo turns it around and has a solid season next year.

Damn..... huge blow. Really took a gamble by not adding SP like other contenders did. Instead, Dipoto emptied the farm system on relievers.

we needed relievers. our bullpen is the only thing saving us right now. Thatcher has been a bust but Street and Grilli have been huge upgrades.

Thing is though, pen was doing great for about a month now heading into the deadline. Just talk about bad timing though. Literally hours after deadline passes, Skaggs gets hurt

 

the big blow is that he'll miss all of next season as well. Skaggs is a huge piece of this teams future IMO. They're gonna be committing $90+ million to about 4-5 players over these next 2 years so they really need their rotation to be filled with young, good, cost-controlled arms. SKaggs and Richards were those 2 high upside ones. Now Skaggs loses a year of further development and the team loses a young starter

At the time, we had more depth at relievers in the farm though. SP should have been the priority especially considering the struggles Wilson was showing for well over a month now.

Santiago and Shoemaker are taken for granted by this board. Both of them have been pretty solid with a few bad outings. AND have pitched in whatever capacity we have needed. How many times have they come in and picked up a win by pitching in a late game?
