What can the Angels do this offseason?

Recommended Posts

The Angels can face the reality that Pujols and Hamilton will never lead this team to the playoffs.  The Angels can, hopefully begin building a team around Trout, Richards, Calhoun, et. al and make a run in 2018.

Trade mlb talent and get some players ready to start theiir mlb career.

Screw Pujols and Hamilton if they do not want to be part of a rebuild.....they can leave.

ERRRR I have to disagree, maybe not a title but playoff? I don't see why not.

The Cubs and Fish are catching on.

The future SMART teams will do a great job of developing talent and keeping enough of it, and staying away from signing players from other teams who are 30+ to Pujols/Hackilton type contracts!

In other words, the antithesis of the Arte Moreno strategy!

The strategy of signing Pujols/Hamilton type contracts is fine, for complementing players you have now.  As long as you don't later say, oh yeah, you have a budget, and can't go over the CBT.

This team is built to win now. A rebuild makes no sense.

If Arte really wants to win now - and this necessitates winning the AL West - the owner must be willing to blow past the CBT and sign 2 top-of-the-rotation pitchers.

Looking at 2015 we have Richards, a few back of the rotation options and a whole bunch of question marks.

Starting pitching is and will continue to be a weakness for the next few seasons. Skaggs was a guy that we were counting on to be a solid piece of the rotation. Now we won't have him for 1 and a half seasons, and who knows if he will be effective again. TJ surgery doesn't have a 100% success rate

as for going all in on Lester, scherzer and other FAs that will come with huge price tags, two words: CJ wilson

They have to grab at least one, IMO. Shields is my pick just because I think he would be the cheapest (could be totally wrong). New guy, Richards, with weaver, santiago and shoe behind them isnt that bad of a rotation. CJ either recovers and is decent or is the 6th man. Depth signing with one of the guys no one is paying attention to (billingsly?), and hope newcomb is ready by 2016.

Not the end of the world yet...

The reason im not all for buying 2 top of the order arms is to have money left over for stanton in 2017....

My guess is Lester goes to the Cubs. Scherzer goes to the Yankees. The bidding for Shields will drag his deal into 9 figures as the Red Sox must add numerous starters.

Bottom line is Arte better be prepared to pay a hefty CBT if he wants to have a chance at winning the West in 2015.

Winning the west only gets easier imo, unless the Mariners continue to rise.  No Lester or Cespedes next year for Oakland, im not sure whoever else they have coming off the books but you can count on them not to make any big signings.

Unfortunately, the A's should be fine next year. They get back Parker and Griffin. They'll have Gray, Shark, Parker, Kazmir, Griffin. Chavez. They'll find someone to plug in in the OF and they won't miss Cespedes that much.

Products of the Angels farm system currently starting: Mike Trout, Kole Calhoun, Erick Aybar, Howie Kendrick, Hank Conger, Jered Weaver, Matt Shoemaker, Garrett Richards...

In other words, the antithesis of the Arte Moreno strategy!

I agree oakland will still be the team to beat, parker and griffin will still be question marks. It usually takes some time to get it back after TJ. A year to recover, and then some time to get the arm back where it was

We won't match what other teams will be willing to spend on Scherzer, Lester or Shields. Scherzer might approach $200,000,000.00. Lester will get around $140,000,000.

And it's probably just as well.

How many fat contracts for FAs age 30+ from other teams have worked out here?

Forget the all in, it's time to construct this franchise the right way (O's), and not the Mess (err Mets) and Cubs (pre-Epstein) way.

Heck, the Tigers could also be grouped in with the Halos.

For all they have spent, how many WS have they won after 1984? ZERO

Heck, how many WS have they even been in since then? TWO, granted both since 2006

And the antithesis = spending $440 million on Ghost Pujols, HamilWhiffATon, and Wilson while not spending any money in Asia and very little in Latin America, and allowing your former GM to gut the farm of all key pitching not named Richards.

If you are going to spend big money, the Trout contract is how to do it (home grown player not age 30+). And it is NEVER a good idea to trade almost ALL of your key pitching prospects away, as the former GM did, not from a premium position like that.

Seems to me, Arte like to spend his big money on offense(Pujols, Hamilton, Wells), so forget about Scherzer, Lester...etc, they might take a shot at Shields but my guess is JD will look for a #3 at around 10 Mil range and then they'll keep Freese, sign a  lefty specialist and call it a off-season.

I hate to say it, as I tend to be more into frugality and building from within, but I think the Angels really need to go after one of the big name free agent starters this off-season - if not Scherzer or Lester, then the consolation prize Shields. Unfortunately I think it more likely that Dipoto goes after a Hammel, Masterson, or Peavy. Solid mid-rotation guys, but with the continued decline of Weaver and the seemingly collapse, or at least erratic play of Wilson, the Angels need a #1-2 type starter.

Talking about Asia.  But Japanese/Korean pitchers might be a cheaper alternative to Shields, Lester, Sherzer.  Granted, they won't be at that high of a level.  But so far this year, Maeda is at a 9-5 with a 2.29 ERA and 1.09 WHIP.  With how Tanaka has gone down.  It might lower the prices of the foreign players.

The Asia pitchers are a big gamble, since their stats aren't against the MLB hitters

Everybody keeps talking about acquiring pitching but I'd like to see them focus on some bats. Hitters who make contact, draw walks, not wild hackers like we have. The problem with this team right now is the lack of a great plate approach, especially with runners in scoring position. They seem to get the yips, especially with the bases loaded. The problem I see right now is that we have hitters that have the same approach (guys that want to pull the ball every time, especially in crucial situations). Then they are susceptible to anything on the outside part of the plate. That's what has been happening lately and I am sick of that same stupid hitting approach. Can we start hitting those outside pitches to the opposite field?
