Cole Hamels Claimed

I doubt he made it to the AL at all. Priority for waiver claims goes from the team with teh worst record to team with the best record in the same league, then teams with the worst record to the best record in the opposite league.

If any team except the Oakland Athletics makes a claim for Hamels, he doesn't reach the Angels. I'm sure some rich NL team like the Dodgers, Cubs etc. would be willing to take Hamels entire contract.

Hamels also has a limited no trade clause. IF any team other than the Red Sox, Angels, Nationals, Dodgers, Cardinals, Braves, Padres, Rangers or Yankees claims him, he can void the deal even if the Phillies want to dump his contract. Random teams with an outside shot in the wild card might make a claim just to block him as they'll figure there's a low risk of them having to take on his contract anyway (either Phils revoke the claim or Hamels voids the trade)

Hamels would have no say if the Phillies simply decided to let him go to another team. I doubt that would happen though.

The Phillies absolutely will not dump Hamels on another team. That means there is zero risk of any team placing a claim on him. Because even if that team can't work out a deal (or doesn't want to work out a deal), the Phillies aren't going to just hand him over.

Not to disrespect anyone, but you guys are insane if you think the Angels won the claim on him.

Baseball is a funny game. You have to ask who benefits by claiming him? Who can afford to pay him? There will be few teams that can afford to take on his salary, and there are few teams that need a pitcher of his caliber. Maybe teams like the Reds, cards, Orioles, or Blue Jays can make a claim. The Tigers and A's dont need him. The Dodgers or Giants could also make a claim. Given those factors, I think it's possible the Halos could have been the team to put in a claim. Not holding my breath, but I can see it being possible.

This was taken from mlbtr.

Phillies ace Cole Hamels has been claimed by an unnamed team on revocable waivers, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). The Phillies will have 48.5 hours to work out a trade with the claiming team or pull Hamels back on waivers. Of course, if Hamels was claimed by any club other than the Red Sox, Angels, Nationals, Dodgers, Cardinals, Braves, Padres, Rangers or Yankees — the nine teams not included on his no-trade clause — he would have the right to veto the deal.

that would be an awfully convenient loop hole for circumventing a no trade clause, if it were true, but it's not.

YoT, your two above posts almost seem to contradict each other. In your second post you imply that teams know if other teams in front of them claim a player. In your first post you call out other teams for not claiming Hamels, when the Cubs, one of the first teams that could claim him, had already claimed him. So which one is it? If the Cubs claim him and other teams with better records know they claimed him, then it would be pointless to also claim him.

I talked with one of the Dodgers attorneys awhile back about the Gonzalez trade. They were literally hitting refresh every 3 seconds hoping the Rangers did not make a claim on him. They were actually shocked Texas passed.

No contradiction at all. First post only used media reports. Second post used 1st hand evidence for

a senior Dodgers attorney.
