So that probably means it was radar-guided?

Interesting that somehow the U.S. knows it was a surface-to-air missile but doesn't know the origin.

A radar system saw a surface-to-air missile system turn on and track an aircraft right before the plane went down, the senior U.S. official said. A second system saw a heat signature at the time the airliner was hit, the official said. The United States is analyzing the trajectory of the missile to try to learn where the attack came from.

A young Dutchman apparently posted a picture of the downed Malaysian airliner on Facebook minutes before he boarded it, writing: "If it should disappear, this is what it looks like."

Manpad systems do though. We have a few that employ stingers and aim-9's (at least when I was in). And I know a handful of russian ones have backup IR in case the radar guide is jammed.
