Crane collapse at Miller Park 15 years ago

Recommended Posts

I guess a lifetime working in aviation makes me more sensitive to it but pretty much every time there's a major incident like this it's a direct result of ignoring an established safety precaution and it's pretty likely you can lay it in the hands of a megacorporate entity. The ones who made the call to do the job are the ones who should have been in the lift basket.

I work in the construction safety business and this video is used a lot during training classes.

From what I have heard is the crane operator that was originally scheduled for that lift told management that he wouldn't make the lift because of the high winds that day. Management went and got another operator that agreed to make the lift.

I also heard that the loud booms that you hear, just before the collapse, are the caissons under the crane exploding as the crane started to shift it's weight. The caissons were there to hold the sheer weight of Big Blue.

This was an accident that could have been avoided but production took priority. Very sad!!

Locally we had a crane collapse during the 1994 construction of the south tower at the Riverside Casino in Laughlin, Nevada

Sad because the whole thing could have been avoided.

Top paragraph in article:

A decision to forgo safety concerns in favor of a speedy end to a Laughlin construction project and the bonuses that went with it has been blamed for a crane collapse that killed three people.
