Thatcher to Angels

Recommended Posts

Sosh and Dipoto etc have talked up Calhoun in the offseason and even during this season. Mike talking about how they really like him atop the order as the ideal lead off hitter. I'd be stunned if he's traded. After this season, and especially in 2016, Trout/Pujols/Hamilton/Wilson/Weav all see their salaries increase since the deals were back-loaded, so it'll be even more important for this team to get quality production for cheap elsewhere. Calhoun provides that for them, a good player who will be cheap for awhile

Of course, what if the talking up of Calhoun was to generate more interest in him?

Angels Acquire Joe Thatcher, Tony Campana

By Zach Links [July 5, 2014 at 8:57am CDT]

The Angels are set to acquire Joe Thatcher and Tony Campana from the Diamondbacks, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.  The return is not yet known.

Rosenthal reported late last night that the Angels were on the hunt for a left-handed reliever and Thatcher was high on their wish list.  Thatcher, who will be a free agent at season’s end, has a 2.63 ERA with 9.4 K/9 and 1.1 BB/9 through 37 appearances this season.

For his career, the 32-year-old owns a 3.26 ERA with 9.4 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 across eight seasons with the Padres and Diamondbacks.  Now, he’ll ply his craft for the Halos in what will be his first time outside of the NL West.

I wonder what the hold-up is in announcing who the Angels are sending in the deal? It can't be much, given that we're getting less than half a season (so maybe 15-20 innings) from Thatcher before he's a free agent.

I'm anticipating it being someone we've heard of from our minors and everyone will freak out. Then that player will flame out and never be impactful, but people will still be pissed because that player could have been part of a package to acquire someone else down the road. That seems to be our MO.

Thatcher hasn't really owned the lefties this year .241/.250/.407 but 17 K's to 0 walks against them. A definite upgrade potential for inherited runners in the middle innings. He could combine with Morin or Jepsen to make the 7th inning much less stressful.

He won't contribute with Jepsen if Jepsen is part of the deal....

MLB Trade Rumors just re-tweeted a Tweet from someone saying the Angels are giving up "a prospect and another minor leaguer" in the deal, while apologizing for being vague.

Edit: that note is actually from a D-Backs beat writer.
