Religious Orgs Want Exemption From LGBT Hiring Order

Recommended Posts

The day after the Supreme Court's Hobby Lobby ruling, a group of religious leaders sent a letter to President Barack Obama asking that he exempt them from a forthcoming executive order that would prohibit federal contractors from discriminating against LGBT people.

The letter, first reported by The Atlantic, was sent on Tuesday by 14 representatives, including the president of Gordon College, an Erie County, Pa., executive and the national faith vote director for Obama for America 2012, of the faith community.

"Without a robust religious exemption," they wrote, "this expansion of hiring rights will come at an unreasonable cost to the common good, national unity and religious freedom."

They also shouldn't be exempt from taxes unless they follow the same non profit rules as other non profits and are open to audit.

Churches do a lot of philanthropy which I am totally fine with a non profit designation, they just should be faced with the same regulations other non profits are.

Could you explain that more?

If a religious organization is receiving federal funds then they should expect to follow the same rules as anyone else.

Personally I don't believe any religious organization should be getting government funding.

Speaking as a federal contractor it sounds like they are talking about going after federal contracts. But yeah many of those contracts are full of conditions (small business requirements, minority/women ownership, etc) and if you disagree with them you are invited not to bid on them.

If they are going after federal contracts then the customer (feds) have the right to dictate the terms and refuse to accept the bid of anyone who doesn't accept those terms.

Churches are tax exempt but they are not required to submit the same tax paperwork that other non profits are.  They are also not required to prove that X amount of the money they make goes to charitable deeds.  Because of that they are also not at risk of audit.

IMO, churches do a lot of good, but if they want some ornate stained glass compound, they should pay taxes on that.

Marshmallows will burn and melt when touching fire.  And so will your face because of the almighty Obama decrees!  This has been another adventure of Jay jumps off the couch and yells Obama.

In next weeks episode Jay shackels a code compliance officer in his basement and calls him Barry.
