Angels within four games of .500 all time

Free agency in the mid 70's made all the difference for the later expansion teams...it was brutal for the Angels, maybe the Astros were competitive a little quicker in the 60's because they had a good farm system---Joe Morgan, Lee May, Jimmy Wynn, etc....

Yep, The Marlins and Rockies were both able to sign players and field minor league teams at least a year or two prior to them actually playing MLB games.   The initial expansion teams basically had a few months to get going.  Autry didnt even set out to own a team, he went there to try to negotiate a radio deal and ended up with a team.  LOL.   There wasn't even an amateur draft until 1965.
