Run Differential, Revisited

very interesting article.  Saber seems to believe it's the A's, then us, then everyone else.   Also, it makes you kinda wonder how the red sox pulled a world series trophy out of their ass last year.

crazy to think about, but a legitimate argument can be made that this oakland team is one of the best in the history of MLB.  I still hate them, though.

The AL East is year after year the hardest division and most years the best division.

Five offensive parks, Two on turf and don't forget the Red Sox are as cliche' as it sounds...battle tested.

They aren't doing so well right now, but don't blink or you'll be the Giants who just blew a 8 1/2 games of a 9 1/2 game lead in about a three week span.

Ok, you won't..but ya get the idea.

Interesting. This analysis has the Astros as better than the Red Sox, Yankees, Phillies and Rangers. Thing is, I could totally see the Astros having the best record of this bunch at the end of the season (perhaps not Yankees if they make a trade for a playoff push).

Makes you wonder why any team would ever sign a player to a long term deal past the age of 36. Madness.

Playoffs are a crapshoot. The EPL has a better method to identify the best team in its league every year.

Please stop with the playoffs are a crapshoot. That was a line coined by Billy Beane as excuse making for not getting his team to the World Series and getting beaten in the playoffs by better teams. Better teams, not lucky teams.

It definitely is a crapshoot.

It's all about getting hot at the right time. Baseball is a game of streaks.

Those are wildcard teams and yes, they get screwed for not winning their division. Then again, few wildcard teams get past the entire round of playoffs and fewer still were really contending playoff teams. So shed no tears for the participation ribbons teams and quit making excuses for teams that don't move on.

Since 2002 there have been:

66 total division winners

22 total wild card teams

World Series appearances:

Wild Card teams-8 times

Division winners- 16 times

If my math is correct, Wild Card team's have actually performed better in the playoffs compared to division winners.

Crapshoot.
