Six man rotation thought?

Recommended Posts

Okay, we know that Weaver and Wilson of course can handle the 210/220 innings workload. But none of the other starters has exceeded 160 innings.

Is it possible to have all 4 of those other guys (Richards, Skaggs, Shoemaker, and Santiago) split up the other 3 spots between them from August on, mainly to keep Richards and Skaggs from pitching 200 innings as Shoe and Santiago aren't in danger of reaching that in 2014.

Shoe has led the PCL in IP in each of the last two years, he's 27 and likely can handle a heavier workload.   Richards is also on the right side of 25, he's topped 145/150 innings in each of the last three years, so the jump to 180 or so innings may not be as severe as they would be for a younger pitcher.   The guy to watch for fatigue is likely Skaggs, and this nice little 2-3 week vacation he's been on likely helps him with that.

Obviously, Weaver and Wilson's starts won't be touched. Plus Richards and Shoemaker probably could get by with pitching about 190 innings (thus maybe just skipping 2-3 starts the rest of the season).

That would basically leave Skaggs to split starts with Santiago, plus the 2-3 starts that Richards and Shoemaker could each skip.

Not a 6 man rotation, but still working around the other 4 starters from the 6 total starters to draw from

Pitchers are going to be really stretched in Aug/Sept. With the makeup game vs Cleveland set for Sept 8, this means the team has ONE off day (Sept 1st) during the final 44 games.

A sixth starter in a couple of those games might be a good idea. If we make the playoffs, we don't want our starters exhausted.
