Looking back on the Haren Trade

Recommended Posts

Isn't it kind of regrettable? Sure, he pitched very well for us while he was here but we missed the playoffs both years he was here, and having Tyler Skaggs and Patrick Corbin right now would be a major plus.

Dipoto screwed up on that one big time.

No Haren meant they got eliminated from the first round of the playoffs in 2011 instead of going to the world series.

Both the DBacks and Angels would've been better off had that trade never happened.

Dipoto is the one that pulled the trigger on that trade for the D-Backs.  Arizona is better off now too.  I remember the media blasted him and fans thought he was terrible for passing on the Yankees package that included Jesus Montero and Dellin Betnaces and instead took the Angels package of Saunders, Corbin and Skaggs.

Dipoto won big time.  Saunders stabilized the rotation, gave Arizona 2+ good years of a #4 starter for relatively cheap.  Corbin climbed the ladder quickly and will be a #4/5 starter for Arizona for the next 6 years at a cheap price.  Tyler Skaggs turned into a Top 20 MLB prospect and will give them 6+ years of a solid #2-4 starter.

Reagins wasn't dumb to make the trade though.  It needed to be done.  Haren was an ace only making 12 million a year.  He was what Kazmir was supposed to be.

The only ones who dislike(d) the trade are Saunders fanboys. I never understood why anyone saw him as anything more than mediocre.

Better to sign Saunders and not give up the third best hitter on the team than to trade for a Saunders equivalent :(

Two and a half years later and now you think it is regrettable? How did you feel about the trade in 2010 when he pitched in 14 games with a 2.87 ERA or in 2011 going 16-10 with a 3.17 ERA?

That was not regrettable and that is what the Angels traded for, not future prospects that have taken three years later to emerge. You have to play for the season you are in, if you can make the playoffs making a big trade you do it because chances at future playoffs are never guaranteed by having a couple hot 20 year olds in your minors.
