IIRC, stealing bases are equal to bunting in terms of productivity based on new school baseball strategy.

not quite, you're not giving up an out on a steal. Unless you get caught, of course.

I think they're just trying to keep him healthy. He has had some hammy issues the past couple seasons, probably figuring a steal is not worth a hurt trout.

I would be fine with that as the reason.

Ricky Henderson says hello

yeah, sabr doesn't think much of steals

and it's pretty much meaningless when it comes to MVP voting and such

it's a real fun element of the game that seems to be going the way of the dodo all around

With Pujols struggling, I say have Trout steal a few bases. This may force the opposing pitchers to throw more fast balls when Pujols is at bat and hopefully help him get out of the funk he's in.

Sorry, I don't have any stats to support this.

Go Halos!!!

I haven't seen much negativity within the sabr community. They just look at things objectively, which means if you're getting caught over 30% of the time, then you shouldn't be running.

That one article written on angelswin was extremely flawed imo.

With that stolen base percentage rate "because Pujols" is not an acceptable answer as his performance these past couple seasons has not warranted him that kind of privilege.

If they really are afraid of him getting hurt, that's a little more acceptable, but still, pretty stupid IMO.

One stolen base can really have a momentum swing in a game, not to mention means we're 1 hit away from scoring another run.

I would too but that's probably not it.  He's running fine as we saw last night on that HR that was called back.

I was referring to your comment about SB as not having much value in MVP voting. I would like to see Trout steal more. But let's be honest how often is when he is on 1st with 2b open and not facing lefty. I commented awhile back that most of Trout hits were extra base hits (him hitting for power was the main reason of his slump imo)

thanks for proving my point

i'm not arguing in favor of the trend of devaluing base stealing over the past half decade and more.

i unambiguously said it was something that i missed. plus, it's one of those stats that doesn't tell the whole story at all. just knowing that a speedy guy might be going any time changes the game in a lot of ways that might not show up in stats directly related to steals.
