Draft Signings - Angels 2014

Recommended Posts

Rd #8 Jake Yacinich signed for $150,000, slot at $158,000

With the announced bonuses so far, the Angels are $135,700 below their alotment.

As a reminder, the bonuses from first ten rounds and any bonus for players drafted  in rounds 11-40 that is over $100,000 counts against the alotment.

It looks like these numbers don't include Joe Gatto, who reportedly will sign for around $140,000 over slot.  If true, that would put the Angels around $10,000 over slot.

I was missing Alex Abbott who signed $130K over.  Here are the bonuses, the slot values, and differences I have so far

Gatto   $1,200,000 / $1,050,600 / + $149,400

Rhoades   $400,000 / $436,000 / - $36,000

Jewell   $250,000 / $326,000 / - $76,800

Abbot   $375,000 / $244,000 / + $130,300

Way   $20,000 / $183,000 / - $163,400

Yacinich  $150,000 / $158,400 / - $8,400

Adams  $137,900 / $137,900 / 0.00

The Angels total draft allotment is $5,774,400

Bonuses to date   $2,532,900

Alotment remaining  $3,241,500

For the bonuses committed compared to the slots for those picks, the Angels are $5,400 under budget.

Chris Ellis and Jordan Kipper are in the College World Series.

Is he talented enough to justify a 7th round pick?  Seems strange to select a talented player that early and then not pay him accordingly with what the slot suggests.  I'd be pissed if those drafted around me received $150k and I only get $20k.  Sure, it's great to begin playing professional ball and I'm sure on the one hand he is appreciative that the Halo's drafted him, but on the other hand he may feel slighted and hold that against the Halo's long-term.

It's likely the Angels told him beforehand that they'd select him early in the draft if he signed for a discount. He probably knew he was projected to go later and agreed to a bonus that was likely higher than he would've received but still a steep discount for the team.

It's how the draft works.  Seniors don't get any money.  He's probably not a 7th round talent, but he at least is an org. guy and we save money to sign guys like Gatto.
