J.B. Schuck or Cole Calhoun?

Recommended Posts

I'm with Scott on this one, it's Calhoun by a mile.  More range, better defensively, more versatile and a higher upside.  The point of a 4th OF is mainly to pinch hit, bunt and pinch run.  I don't see a huge difference between the two in these categories, but if you were to ask me who I'd rather have as he everyday RF should Hamilton need a couple weeks on the DL, I'd say Calhoun.

I would say then that Calhoun to start in the minor to get everyday at bats.  And Shuck as backup, where he really has no place to play, and might be lucky to get one game in a week.  If you want a replacement in the OF, you go with Trumbo.  Same with first.  And with Conger scorching spring, he's probably your primary off the bench guy or DH when Trumbo goes into the field to give a guy a day off.

IMO, Shuck may just be a placeholder for the start of the season, till Hall recovers.  Hall just has that veteran feel, and will then become the bench depth. And if a starting OF gets hurt, to the point of the DL, then you call up Calhoun to take the starting roll.

Agree..   Calhoun needs regular at bats not spot duty once a week.

If the team needs an Orlando Palmiero I'd rather it be Shuck.

Kole Calhoun played 2010 with Orem, 2011 with High A and and 2012 with AAA, I don't think they need to worry about option years yet. Shuck was an NRI, meaning a minor league deal, meaning that he can be sent to the minors.

I thought if they were going to give the 4th/5th OF spot to anyone other than Calhoun, they'd have given it to Matt Young, who just dominated in Spring with the bat.

I think they want someone who can play all three OF spots and first, but they have Trumbo and Kendrick able to do that in the majors…already..
