Raul Ibanez

Navarro's done well in the past in AAA but this year there's something different about him.  His hands are quieter, he's showing balance and driving the bat through the ball rather than meeting it.  The adjustments he's make will make it increasingly difficult for the Angels not have him in a reserve OF and PH spot.

He's a MLB player.  This team has a few of them in AAA right now.  Is he a star... no, but could he carve out a Juan Beniquez sort of career IMO.   This team is going to have to make some decisions on a few guys soon.

Everyone remember Steve Finley and how much crap we gave him?

At the end of may he had a .220 avg with a .710 ops.

Thru the same number of plate appearances, he's got the 3rd lowest BA in franchise history.

As an aside, for 243 pa that Brandon Wood had in 2010, his wRC+ was 1.  One.  Uno.

It's the second worst in the history of baseball for a player with at least 240 pa.  Bill Bergen had a wRC+ of 0 in 1911

If the angels had no one to replace ibanez, I could possibly understand why he's still on the team, but that is not the case.

If the Angels miss the playoffs by a couple of games, it will be because they kept Ibanez around way too long.

to not have someone to replace him would mean that they closed their entire minor league system

LOL, If we miss the playoffs by a couple of games it will be because the bullpen coughed up some easy wins in April.

I don't even blame Raul at this point. Why is Sosh putting him at 5/6 in the order?!? If there is some mysterious reason he has to bat make him #9 and let him earn something higher. This is the last week of May for Pete Rose's sake. The trend is established.

Because he's a veteran. Rickey Henderson could come out of retirement and Scioscia would play him every day.

Actually, it would be "because of" an infinite number of things you could point to. Ibanez is on track to be around a -1 WAR player (and this is a case where WAR is being pretty bloody generous). Green, Navarro or Cron would all be at least 1 WAR players as our regular DH. So there's nothing "LOL" about saying that it could look very costly and stupid if we miss the playoffs by a couple of games.

To be honest, I really can't remember too many games where he cost us a win.

That's flawed logic; unlike with pitchers, you generally can't point to anyone on the offense costing any team a win unless they do something drastic, like commit a baserunning error in the 9th that ends the game. So really Ibanez could be hitless on the season and you could still say he hasn't cost us a game.

The Angels signed Ibañez, Mulder, Burnett, Blanton, Hamilton, Pujols, etc., etc. The Giants signed Hudson & Morse last year and they are important parts to a team that is 16 game over .500. Giants won 2 WS in the last three years. Who do you think has a better GM?

The Giants had a worse record than the Angels last season. 6 of the last 10 seasons they were under .500.

Sabean is actually an underrated GM IMO. Torres for Pagan. Pence trade. Hudson and Morse. Scutaro trade.

He's made some key moves that have helped them win the last few years. No doubt.

Having said that, I think you're being a tad harsh on Dipoto. Smith was a good signing, Trumbo trade was good. And he has employed some scouts that seem to know what they're doing. We're on the right track

Was it Sabean that made the famous-for-sucking trade of Francisco Liriano, Boof Bonser, and Joe Nathan for Pierzynski.

Sure was

"It's not often you can send a reliever and two prospects away for a front-line, All-Star, left-handed hitting catcher," Sabean said.
