Martin says she plays a key role in the books...but the show has seemed to cut her out. I agree if she was coming back it would have been last night. I just don't see a role for her in the show...though I guess the books have Brienne meet up with her, correct? So, maybe that is the reveal next season.

That thought crossed my mind as well, but they hadn't escaped yet. The scenes go. Brienne/Stannis->Ramsey cleaning up->Sansa/Theon

 

Watching it again, it doesn't seem like he's looking off to the side as much as it does in the isolated GIF.

I just rewatched it. I thought I remembered him looking off in the distance at something, but when I watched it just now it seems more of him thinking...not that he was focusing on something he saw...but rather accepting his fate and the realization that he deserved it

So, he might publish prequel stories, or the winds of winter, or who knows, maybe just start a new series based in another world. Dude doesn't know how to finish his story, or is too in love with his world to finish it up, or a combination therof.  By the time he's done the series will be over and most people will have moved on.
