The idea is that because he's going to Oakland, his performance is going to dramatically increase out of nowhere. Billy Beane has a knack for knowing when to acquire players and when to let players go.

 

For example, not re-signing Balfour appears to be a great decision. They were able to trade for Jim Johnson and get the same terrible performance as Balfour for slightly less money.
