The sliding mitt

Recommended Posts

I read this morning that Ben Zobrist has joined the ranks of thumb jammed sliders this season. So right now I'm watching the Reds-Padres game and I see Billy Hamilton get a single and put what looks like a mitten on his left hand. I hadn't seen this before but it looks like a good thing for anyone planning to steal more than occasionally and using the head first slide.

Obviously it can't help knuckleheads like Hamilton who do it at 1st base but once on first it seems like a no-brainer.

Just switched games and I see Segura wearing the same thing on his right hand.

They have been around for years.  Seems like it's a pain to put on too.

Makes me wonder though.  Is another benefit to the mitt, that it helps cling to bases?  Kind of like if you brush your bare hand against tile, you will slide right over.  But if you put a rubber glove on, and try to brush your hand over the tile, you will definitely feel resistance.
