We really didn't replace Jerome this off-season. We need someone who can come in for 3 innings or spot start.

Having to use 5 relievers in a blow out is not going to help this bull pen.

Jerome was really not good last year as a spot starter, he had an ERA over 5 and right now he has an ERA of 6.00.

Santiago is probably the best option for this role. Problem is we don't actually have a viable 5th starter to replace him. If any starters on this team go down with an injury the lack of SP depth will be a huge problem.

I think we have guys that can pitch to a 5 ERA already.

it's like people are intentionally incapable of understanding english. he's, obviously, saying that the angels need an effective long reliever, which is the role williams most often occupied for the angels and not saying we need to replace williams' numbers.

 

i agree with the sentiment that we need another reliever, but i think it's on the backend. a long reliever should be fairly easy to fill.

I agree with this. Very doubtful that Santiago gets moved for the reason you stated. At this point he would be better suited in that role as being a starter obviously isn't working out.

This is the only game Santiago pitched poorly and it started off with that disastrous error in RCF.  He will settle down (IMO).  His stuff is really good.  He needs to calm down a bit.

I agree with the sentiment that this team could use a long man out of the pen, but I don't see why Santiago would be that guy.  IMO you want a pitcher who throws strikes, will give up some hits, but is basically reliably mediocre, since what you're really asking him to do is eat innings in a game that has already been decided.  So far from what I've seen of Santiago, he's not that guy.  Way too erratic, too many control problems, and when he's on his stuff is too good to be wasted as a long man.

I recall when free agency started, his agent said that a lot of teams were interested in Williams as a starter. It's sad that the Astros don't even want him as a RP and the season is only half over.

Although I like Jerome, from a performance standpoint I don't believe there's anything he can do at this point that Michael Roth, Drew Rucinski, Wade LeBlanc, Hector Santiago, Tyler Skaggs or Matt Shoemaker couldn't do.
