Matt Shoemaker last night...

But he's been terrible outside of that start. He has a 6.31 ERA on the season.

I'm all for moving Santiago to the pen, but not if Shoemaker is going to replace him.

PCL inflated numbers. They probably translate to slightly better numbers or at worst, the same numbers in a hitters park at the big league level.

The difference is Shoemaker has something resembling "command".

This and until Santiago's latest start, he typically went for 3 or 4 solid inning before having a meltdown. That suggests he could be well suited for mid to long relief appearances. As it is we dont' really have a long reliever / spot starter type in the pen ever since we let Jerome Williams go.

I dunno, I'm not as high on Shoemaker as some on this site. This season, I remember the Oakland extra innings game where he got out of a jam in his first inning, and had zero control in his second inning, ultimately losing.  As others have said, he has really struggled in AAA this season. Sure you could say that the league inflates numbers, which it does, but an over 6 ERA and a 1.675 WHIP is still really bad, regardless of the park and league. He really has struggled in his minors career with the exception of a nice stint in AA in 2011. Santiago has been bad, but I just don't feel like Shoemaker is the answer. Would love to eat crow on this one though.

That is why it would have been a good idea to sign a Capuano like so many wanted to this offseason. We could have simply started him in bullpen and if someone struggled, like Santiago has, they could switch roles. Richards has been awesome, Skaggs has been solid, and Santiago has been terrible. This is probably what you could expect going into the season relying on three unknowns as starters. This is and the bullpen, is the issue I have with Dipoto's approach this offseason.

Shoemaker will perform as good as Santiago as a starter.

I highly doubt that. Shoemaker can give us innings because of his command and he had big league stuff. FB 90-94 MPH, good curve, splitter and cutter.

I've seen Shoemaker pitch, his fastball is pretty straight.

so in other words a starting pitcher equivalent of Frieri / 2012 Ervin Santana?

I like both Shoemaker and Santiago. I think Angels fans have been burnt too many times in the recent past, and are calling for hasty action for fear we'll drop too far back.

The way I see it, Weav, Wilson and Richards are so good right now that we can afford to gamble on upside for another month. If Santiago figured it out, the Angels have a solid #3 SP, if not, the Angels have the lefty specialist they need in the pen.

But you don't pull the plug in favor of limited upside (Shoemaker) just because Santiago had a bad April. Maybe if we had a Richards type in AAA, then yeah you make the switch, but we don't, we have a 5th starter at best.

It depends on whether Santiago needs a tweak or some major work.  While I like Shoemaker, I still think Santiago has more upside.  Last year he was terrific.  Even if he ends up a little worse than that, he's still probably a #4.  Just let him do his thing.  Don't try to 'fix' his lack of control.

They actually can't afford to gamble with Santiago, not with this bullpen. Having a starter that can't get past the 5th inning is an automatic loss.

You missed his main point though. Replacing santiago with a fringe 5th starter wont really accomplish much imo.

Weaver, Wilson, Richards and even Skaggs' really good starts don't mean squat when you have an offense that routinely struggles and a bullpen that will blow many of those. I agree that being patient on Santiago may not work out.

Salt Lake RHP Matt Shoemaker earned a no decision after earning Triple-A career-high 11 strikeouts going 7.0 innings while giving up two runs and eight hits.

Like I've said in other threads, time for Santiago to go to the pen and let Shoemaker have the #5 spot.

Count me in. I'm ready to try this.

IMO,  we are pulling the plug too early on Santiago.  His 3.5 ERA last year in about 140 innings and 3.3 the year before about 70 innings wasn't a fluke.  He's got the ability.  Hopefully Butcher can get him back on track and get him back in the rotation.

It is a quick hook on Santiago, especially when you consider how long they let Blanton stay in the rotation last year.  I suspect he'll make his way back to the rotation in pretty short order.

It's possible he's getting the quick hook because Blanton.

Good point regarding the Blanton scenerio.  Also, easier to use a quick hook on a guy only making 500k.
