that on May 7th:

-Hamilton had only played 8 games

-Calhoun had only played 14 games

-Trout was hitting under .300

-David Freese was hitting.202

-Ian Stewart was getting regular ABs in the middle of the order and hitting .180

-ditto with Raul Ibanez, hitting .138

-and the bullpen was pulling it's usual crap

You'd have to assume we were way under .500 and probably 7 or 8 games out of first.

Nope.  .500 and just 2.5 out.

Pretty crazy they've managed to win as many games as they have.

Nope. a game over .500 and just 2.5 out.

Good post! I agree, we've hung in there. The frustrating part is that if you take away the bullpen disaster the Angels would be in 1st place right now.

Oh yeah, we're not a game over, we're back to .500.

It is frustrating, but I think every team has this.  "If only our starting pitching was better", "If only so and so wasn't hurt", "if only our offense hit for power".

BP is definitely the weak link for the Angels, but there is reason for optimism.  1 or 2 guys can make a huge difference, because everyone else slots in differently.  If, and obviously a huge if, but if Brunett and/or DDLR can come back and be effective some time in the next month or so, then the BP could get considerably better.
