The excuse Santiago gets is that he doesn't have enough run support. Those numbers are acceptable for a 5th starter. With Jepsen, whose same sample size is better, people say he should be DFA'd, has no place on this team even though he's probably the 5th reliever.

Why?

Your example ignores the 7 inherited runners that scored on Jepsen over that span, the last two of which, coincidentally, were credited to Santiago.  So, cool comparison.

So you are assuming Santiago would have not allowed those two runners to score? He came out for a reason... he was done. Those runs probably would have scored anyway.

You're the one who tried to use earned runs to make a comparison between a reliever and a starter, which is just about as meaningless a comparison you can make between starters and relievers, particularly over such a sample size.  Maybe fangraphs can add a "Miss. Cleo" tab to determine when runs probably would've scored to help clear these things up.

Jepsen is the #5 reliever! Why is he expected to put out fires in the middle of games? He's not a closer. He's not a set up man. He's not even a 7th inning guy. Yet he is expected to pitch as such.

Why isn't Santiago expected to pitch like a #2 or #3 pitcher in the rotation?

Is this a real argument that is actually being made right now
